Michelle LGBTQ and same-sex marriage are becoming more common around the world. How is it perceived in Buddhism?
ミッシェール 世間では、LGBTQや同性婚の問題が取り上げられることが多くなってきています。仏教ではどう考えるのでしょうか？
Nanjo Under many religions worldwide, LGBTQ had long been deprived of equality, but there are no exceptions to Amida Buddha’s salvation. Whether one is LGBTQ or not, it does not matter. He has vowed to save all beings equally.
南條 世界の多くの宗教の下で、LGBTQは長い間、平等性を奪われていましたが、阿弥陀仏の救済には例外はありません。LGBTQであろうとなかろうと、関係ありません。すべての生き物を平等に救うことを誓っておられます。
Michelle The concept of “no exceptions” is very uplifting! Is Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple also working on any initiatives?
ミッシェール 「例外を認めない」というコンセプトは、素晴らしく、とても高揚感がありますね！ 築地本願寺では、何か取り組みをされているのですか？
Nanjo In October 2016, a same-sex wedding was held at Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple in the name of “Partnership Buddhist Dedication Ceremony”. At the temple, we are currently actively promoting activities to help everyone find the love of their life.
南條 2016年10月、パートナーシップ仏前奉告式と称して、築地本願寺で同性の挙式を行なったことがあります。現在は、お寺での婚活を積極的に推進しています。
Michelle I find the efforts and challenges made by Tsukiji Hongwanji to be very attractive and I look forward to what lies ahead in the future.

【Column】Temples Responding to People’s Diversity
Respect for LGBTQ people and other diverse ways of being, and the desire for all people to live their lives as they are and be happy, is at the core of Buddhist teachings. Especially, Amida Buddha’s vows offer universal salvation.
In fact, since the 1970s, a temple of the Hongwanji sect of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism in California has been holding weddings for LGBTQ people. The couples who were married have since become members of the temple and are involved in many activities.
But even though a marriage can be held, there are still many practical problems to be solved. We need to continue to think about how to stand by the sexual minorities at milestones in their lives, such as family graves, Buddhist names, funerals, and marriages.

人々の苦悩に応えるお寺
LGBTQの方々をはじめ多種多様なあり方を尊重し、すべての人が、自らの人生を自分らしくありのままに生き、幸せでありたいと願うことは、仏教の教えの根幹にも相通じるところがあります。とりわけ、阿弥陀仏は、生きとし生けるものすべてを救うと誓われています。
事実、カリフォルニアの浄土真宗本願寺派のお寺では1970年代からLGBTQの方々の結婚式が行われています。挙式したカップルはその後も門信徒となってお寺に所属され活動に携わっています。
実践的な問題は山積みです。お墓や法名、葬儀や結婚など、人生の節目にあたって性的マイノリティとされる当事者の方々にいかに寄り添い、どのように取り組んでいくのか、引き続き考えていかねばなりません。
